But come Monday, the Melbourne man, who has walked around Australia dressed as a desert Star Wars "sandtrooper" to raise money for charity, won't be the only one sporting a costume from the popular franchise.

On May 4, International Star Wars Day, expect to see legions of people dressed as stormtroopers and other Star Wars characters for "May the fourth be with you"-themed events.

As the date falls on a work day this year, fewer cinemas than usual are screening all-day film marathons, but that's unlikely to discourage true fans from celebrating their most important day of the year.

However, the release date of the seventh instalment, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, may make December 17 the most important date of 2015 for Australians.

In Sydney, Disney (studios) will host an event where fans can walk on treadmills in Pitt Street Mall at lunchtime - a homage to the 15,000 kilometres Mr Loxley has walked, through every state and territory of Australia, raising more than $57,000 for the Monash Children's Hospital.

Though Mr Loxley is a Star Wars fan, he's not a fanatic. "I can't name all the characters," he said. But his sandtrooper outfit has been a great help to his fundraising efforts.

"People stop and ask me questions and then they donate, so it's been great advertising," said Mr Loxley, whose adventure ends on June 14.

In Melbourne, professional Lego "master builders" Dan and Chris Steininger, a father-and-son team, spent the weekend constructing the world's largest Millennium Falcon model, out of 200,000 Lego bricks. It will stand about 3½ metres wide and more than four metres long.

"Star Wars is always a very popular theme for Lego," Chris Steininger said.

They said the Millennium Falcon statue would be particularly challenging to build because of the its peculiar shape.

"Most sculptures are wider at the base and skinnier at the top, whereas the Millennium Falcon is a big pancake. It's really wide, and the hard part is going to be building the internal structure to allow us to build the top of the model," Chris said.

The Millennium Falcon will be displayed in the shopping centre for another week.
