It was originally worth five shillings, but now one of Australia's rarest coins has been sold for a record-breaking price of $550,000.
The "Madrid Holey Dollar" was used in New South Wales in the 1800s, but only six exist to this day.
The coin, the only one in private hands, was put on the market last month and sold this week to a collector from Queensland.
"This particular collector has been a Coinworks client for several years. He has a magnificent dump he bought from me two years ago, he also has a magnificent Adelaide pound which is our very first gold coin," numismatics expert Belinda Downie said.
"Over time, he is accumulating colonial coin rarities. Whatever he buys, he's always been aspiring to the best quality he could acquire. He had been looking at Holey Dollars, we offered him one last year, but the timing wasn't right for him.
"When the Madrid Holey Dollar came up it was right and he decided to splurge."
Ms Downie said Australia had a high proportion of coin collectors, but that it wasn't always an easy sell.
"Once a client sets the bar high, sometimes it's very difficult to offer them coins because there's nothing that comes around that's good enough," she said.
"Sometimes it's difficult to find them a coin which matches the rest of their collection."
A "Lima Holey Dollar" set a world record for early Australian coins when it was sold to a West Australian collector for $495,000 in 2013.
In 2014, another Lima Holey Dollar, valued at approximately $300,000, was stolen from the NSW State Library.
This most recent sale smashed the previous record, even though it fell a little bit short of the estimated $600,000 value.
"The rare coin market is still a relatively unknown market. It's not like the housing or share markets," Ms Downie said.
"What we find with clients, particularly those making a large transaction, they're always looking for the buffer. We see that time and time again.
"It's not unusual. At the end of the day, the vendor is happy, the buyer is happy and I'm happy. Everybody wins."
