Men Go Down In Thriller
Mark Roberts
The Palerang United Men took on the top placed ANU Blue who were averaging over 7 goals a game at ANU last Saturday. The last time these two teams met it was a tight tussle with only 1 goal separating them and a hail storm calling the game off early in favour of ANU. Palerang United were keen to leave an impression on the ladder leaders that they weren’t the only contenders for the premiership and an exciting and thrilling game ensued. ANU played with controlled passing movements but the patience of Palerang United’s defence saw an even possession flow upsetting the dominating style of game ANU play. The short neat passing game of ANU after 15 minutes was a disjointed and frayed mess with Karuna Bajracharya chiming in with some great chatter in midfield to rub in the fact that our simple game plan was rocking ANU’s boat.
Troy Clark and Ben Pritchard were controlling the centre of defence extremely well with Jai Gulia and Mitchell Moon ably assisting them on the left and right side. Bens throw ins were devastatingly accurate in the ANU’s defensive third of the field placing extreme pressure on their back four with Scott Birkett Dan Ison and Surya Bajracharya creating havoc in the forward line. Ian Rayner got of the best shot on goal in the first half after an excellent passing phase which started from Keith Acheson in midfield until Ben put in another long throw which was tapped onto the crossbar from the ANU keeper. Unfortunately Surya Bajracharya came off with a hamstring strain with 5 minutes to go in the first half after receiving a through ball and over stretching for a shot on goal. Half time score was 0-0 and ANU were starting to bicker with each other through the frustration of not being in control of the game. Palerang United were pumped up with an excellent first half and were keen to get back on the field and turn up the pressure.
The second half was end to end football of a high quality with neither team backing off. Andrew Crisp was busier in goal as ANU had a strong five minute period of sustained attack midway through the half and ANU took the lead after a shot was threaded through the defensive line from the edge of the box and dipped under a diving outstretched Andrew Crisp. Palerang United were disappointed with the goal but applied immediate pressure on the ANU goal. A series of corner kicks came close to getting an equaliser but failed. A quick release of the ball from Andrew Crisp after a failed ANU attack saw the ball travel two thirds the length of the field and a tenacious Scott Birkett forced his way through the last two ANU defenders and carried the ball into the goal box slotting the ball into the goal. One – One and only 15 minutes to go.
The game’s intensity lifted another level as both team strived for the winning goal. With only 1 minute to go an ANU strike on goal hit the crossbar and bounced down into the ground and into Andrew Crisps arms and the referee called play on as he was too far away to see if the ball had crossed the goal line and if it was a goal or not. ANU protested profusely at the referee until he was called upon to check with the linesman. After a brief discussion the goal was awarded and the game ended as Palerang United kicked off again. Wow! A tough way to lose the game and the boys were a bundle of mixed emotions after coming so close to be the first team to take points off ANU this season. However Palerang United came scarily close to beating ANU and a bounce of the ball was the difference in the end. Great game boys and good luck this week as we take on the second placed Belsouth in Braidwood. Kickoff 1pm. It should be a cracker!
All age women win
By Matilda Corby
After two weeks off, Palerang United all age women were back in action on a warm Sunday afternoon, winning against Gungahlin united 1-0.
With the sun in their eyes the team started slowly, before picking up their rhythm. Some strong breaks down left and right side were made as Palerang began to get a few shots on goal. Gungahlin soon found their rhythm and pressed hard. The Palerang defence was too strong and shut down any opportunities they had to score. Matilda Corby and Lauren Campbell clearing the ball again and again from the backs. These clearence balls soon found the midfield but no goals were scored. As the half continued on and the girls moved the ball around, Gungahlin were left defending their goal for the remainder of the half. The whistle blew to signal half time with the scores locked at 0-0.
Palerang dominated the opening 15 minutes of the second half, seeing as many as a dozen shots on goal. Phoebe Lang got a shot on that tricked the goalkeeper and looked promising but rebounded off the post and back into play. Gungahlin worked their way back into the game again and pushed hard on the left side of Palerang's field. Again the Palerang defence stood up and shut down almost every opportunity Gungahlin had at scoring. As Palerang again began to dominate, the shots on goal began to flow again. It was not long before the result finally came from Jo Park who stormed towards the goal before using all her power to strike the ball right into the back of the net. From then onwards, the game swung Palerang's way and a few more opportunities were taken before the final whistle blew. The final score was 1-0.
Now completed the first half of their season, Palerang all age women have won 4 matches in a row and are hoping their winning streak continues. Next week they take on Narrabundah at Calwell. Good luck ladies!
Mixed Under 10’s
Palerang United 5 vs. Monaro Panthers 0
Palerang VS Monaro Panthers White at Daivd Madew Oval Jerrabomberra, the first fifteen minutes of this game could see that either team was well in the running to be the winning side, however with a late first half goal by Palerang making it 1-0 gave us the confidence to step it up a notch in the second half, and that’s exactly what they did. The Panthers showed outstanding defence and were not allowing any easy break through for us at any stage, however our Palerang crew really got it together with their position placement and passing the ball, always steering it to the outside so the wings could deliver it back to the middle creating better opportunities for goals.
Coordination and team work in the second half was outstanding.
Palerang should be very proud of their efforts and outstanding team work on Saturday as I feel this game was the turning point for them.
Goal scorers were Ryan Blowes 2, Hattie Cram 2 and Isabella Hindmarsh 1, final score was 5-0.
Keep up the great work and good luck next game.
Jason Hindmarsh
Under 15’s Men
Palerang United 1 vs. Marist 2
The match was simply put down as the one that got away from us.
We had plenty of possession, field position but could not find the back of the net. Our goal came from a cracking header from Angus Bunn that bought the house down.
Keep your spirits up and heads held high lads.
You have all improved out of sight since the beginning of the season and working really well as a team.
Next week we have another home game so expect the big crowds.

Under 12’s
Crocodiles 3 vs. Lizards 2
After a weekend off, the teams were in full swing with energy pumping through their bodies. Both teams started off very well, being as competent as each other, gave the parents and spectators a great game to watch.
The first goal was scored by Crocodiles player, Annabel Flack. A fantastic long and strong kick coming from the back line of Ananta Bajracharya, Annabel was able to run smoothly onto the ball and dribble it to the goal before shooting it past the goalie.
But just as the crocodiles thought they had the glory for the first half, Darcy Lions for the Lizards came out of nowhere and slipped the ball past a crowded goal of defenders. Making the crowd go wild and taking the score to 1 all for half time.
The half time oranges definitely gave the players a boost. Annabel Flack scored another cracker of a goal just after the crocodiles kicked off, putting them in front, 2-1. Not long after some fantastic football from both teams, Nelson Sargent used a tactical shot from 10 meters out, the melted, frosty ground was an advantage as the ball was wet and hard for the goal keeper to get a grip, he saw the ball sneak over the goal line. Making the score 3-1.
Time was nearly up and defending was fantastic from all the Crocodiles as they kept the Lizards out. But, as one of the Lizards booted the ball at the goal, Annabel Flack was very unlucky with the positioning of her body and the ball ricocheted off her leg, slipping past her goal keeper, scoring an own goal.
But in the end, when the whistle blew, the Crocodiles came out on top with a close score of 3-2. Well done to all the players on a super effort and providing an entertaining game.
Under 14’s
Wanderers 1vs. Mariners 7
The under 14’s really are enjoying playing on a small field. It is giving them a great work out and allowing them to improve on their soccer skills, including passing, dribbling, footwork and control of the ball.
It really is fantastic to see the youth of Braidwood getting in and having a friendly game of soccer with their mates. It’s inspiring to watch, as their skills are very impressive and also their knowledge of the game.
Tristan Neate is truly a superstar! His speed and skills are amazing, which were definitely presented during this game, as he scored 5 goals alone. His team mate, Declan, slipped in a neat shot against the Wanderers taking the score for his team to 6-0. Angus Bunn, for the Wanderers, was passed an accurate ball and he decided to take a shot from 10 meters out and it paid off. It was a beautiful shot slipping past the keeper’s right hand side.
Todd Hazelton was so excited when he scored his first goal for the season. He has improved enormously over the first 5 weeks of soccer, his team mates have encouraged him the whole way and were very proud to see him score.
The end result of a friendly game of soccer was 7-1 to the Mariners. Fantastic work from all players, so well done.

U5s Soccer Report
Some very good games have been played between the U5s Blues and Green teams over this session of soccer. All players are progressing well and good listening skills, together with eager participation, has helped the U5s gain an understanding of the game. Ball development skills are progressing well as is evident in the standard of games now.
Keeping enough Blues on the paddock has been a bit of a challenge against the well represented Greens. However, this has not dampened the determination of the Blues, with consistent attacks on the Green’s goal by speedy players Archer Halligan, Joshua Clarke and Jack D’Arcy, which has kept the scoring fairly even throughout. Angus Bradley and Elsie Richardson are building their skills very well and can chase the action and make some big kicks. Sophia Shea, one of the youngest players, is finding her feet with some good kicks too. Newcomer, Declan Storay has made an enthusiastic first impression.
The Greens are impressive in their line-up led by straight-shooter Kieran Saunders, with excellent tackling and defence play and big kicks by Sienna Royds, Phoenix Stephens, and Andison Reid-Bruce. Annaleis Goode, Clara Costigan and River Parsons are building their confidence and doing some good tackling and kicking and are well focussed on keeping up with the game.
Today Braidwood. Tomorrow the Socceroos and Matildas! Many thanks to Billy Halligan and James Royds for your assistance with coaching and to the parents and families of the U5s for your support.
