The family of a man killed in a suspected gangland shooting in a Sydney playground were begging for answers at Glebe Coroner's Court on Tuesday morning.

Hedi Ayoub's mother wailed and had to be supported while she walked, while his young wife clutched a large teddy bear adorned with red hearts.

Police say they are hunting for a group of men after Mr Ayoub, believed to be aged in his 20s, was fatally shot underneath a tree at Punchbowl about 4.35pm on Monday.

It is believed Mr Ayoub was deliberately targeted and officers were searching for a blue 4WD seen leaving Salmon Reserve shortly after a number of shots were fired, police said.

On Tuesday morning, the deceased's mother approached a police officer who was involved in separate case, and hysterically asked him if he had been at the scene of the shooting.

"I saw you yesterday," she said, through tears.

She and the man's father occasionally wailed and sobbed loudly.

In a loud voice, the father told an employee at the court: "Make sure nothing is taken from my son's body.

"It's my son. I want nothing, not one thing taken from him. Not his heart, nothing at all."

Close friend Abdullah Albarq said the body builder and "beloved brother" would be forever missed.

"A very dear friend to me he will be missed by many and never forgotten," he posted online.

Mulga Street resident Marie said her neighbours had seen a group of men "hanging around the park" which she described as safe and peaceful.

"It's a very, very safe place," Marie said.

"I've been living here for 20 years and nothing happened like this ever."

Bankstown police  and homicide detectives worked through the night and continued to search for the group they believe were involved in the fatal shooting.
