The man's wife, 38, died after a fire started in the bedroom of thier Sydney home. The cause of the fire is not yet known but firefighters are investigating whether it was sparked by a cigarette.

Firefighters carried the woman from the burning home in Cabramatta West but she was unable to be revived, Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Josh Turner said.

The woman's husband and teenage son managed to escape the blaze which started in thier Sulman Road house just before 7.30am.

"Fire crews rescued one lady from a bedroom, the bedroom being the source of the fire and instigated CPR on the front lawn of the house," he said.

"But unfortunately as a result of her injuries, she later passed away at the scene."

Superintendent Turner said firefighters arrived at the home to find the woman's husband and son standing helplessly on the lawn outside.

He said there was a  large amount of smoke wafting out through a broken window of the bedroom where the woman had been at the time the fire started.

"Fire crews made their way through the front door and were told that there was one person still inside.

"It appears all persons were sleeping in separate bedrooms."

Police said a number of nearby neighbours were also evacuated as several crews worked to put the fire out.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
