To achieve this our volunteers:
* Do pastoral care visits with the elderly at Braidwood MPS and in the community
* Give a hand up to those in need by distributing vouchers for food, fuel, gas and emergency accommodation. We also supply Christmas Hampers, emergency wood and water supplies. In the 2014-2015 financial year about $13,000 was given out in support.
* Staff the opening of our room at the Anglican Community Hall each Thursday between 10.00am and 12 noon so clients can drop in for help and, if necessary, be referred to agencies in Canberra or Queanbeyan
* Roster having our mobile phone so clients can contact BLC 24/7 on 0437 989 993
* Arrange excursions for youth during the school holidays
* Conduct the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program for local young people
* Organise courses of benefit to our community, such as Mental Health First Aid and Parent Training
* Promote support for young mothers and programs such as “Adopt a Grandparent”
WHO IS THE BLC
BLC is run by a Committee of Management deliberately structured to
provide representatives from a broad cross-section of the Braidwood community.
It consists of both elected and appointed members which enables careful
consideration of the appropriate skill set needed by the committee. The
committee currently consists of 10 members, with the Treasurer
being externally appointed. Those members are:Linda Bunn, Cathy French, Nick Fry (Alternate: Ruth Pettit), Jayde Tranter (Treasurer), Helen Goddard (Vice President), Peter Malone (President), Jo Parsons, Jenny Stanley, Kathy Toirkens, Ted Younger (Secretary)
WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF THE BLC
BLC wishes to continue to serve our community to the best of our abilities. The creation of a new base at the Recreation Ground will strengthen our ability to do this and particularly help us to grow our services to the young people of the region.
BLC congratulates Palerang Council, the Federal and State governments (and particularly our local member Mr Barilaro) and our wonderful Braidwood Community Bank for their support of the Recreation Ground Redevelopment project, of which BLC is just a small part. It is a project that will benefit many different groups and people within our community.
The new BLC base will be used to address the welfare needs of individuals and families in our community and in particular will:
1. Help address the lack of resources and facilities for young people in the 13-19 year age bracket
2. Be a permanent base from which to provide support to new parents and
3. Be a permanent base from which to provide emergency welfare relief and pastoral care.
4. Be a flexible space available for use by a range of other groups within the community
The specific activities BLC will undertake in the centre will develop and change over time as different needs arise and appropriate staffing and funding is found. Some possible activities may include:
* Teenage Hang Out/Study area, including structured sessions
* Recreational activities for young people
* Meals for students,
* A range of training courses (e.g. self esteem, drug and alcohol, parent training, mental health)
* Emergency welfare support
* Pastoral care
