According to the pesky etymologist, David Astle the golf terms ambrose and stableford have odd geographic origins. Ambrose is named after Mary and Richard Ambrose, expat Americans from Michigan who were living in Victor Harbour, South Australia, when they came up with the golf format that bears their name.

Stableford is named after Dr Frank Stableford, another expat American. He was living in Wales when he thought that applying a handicap rating to each hole may improve the game.
After last Saturday’s Daargun Aboriginal Corporation Trophy presentations the president inadvertently sparked a sexist debate. She was promoting the Ladies Open on September 20 and the need for as much help as possible. She suggested that the men could help by asking the wife or partner to make sandwiches or slices for the complimentary lunch.
“What? Can’t men make sandwiches?” piped up Ms Sim. ”What’s wrong with them?” A mere male, straight out of the New Idea format implied that men’s efforts in this regard were questionable and the visiting ladies would appreciate edible sandwiches.
It was all very strange and reminded me of a 1970’s announcement in a Christian newsletter that a particular church was having a discussion on the role of women in the church. It concluded its invitation with a request that the ladies bring a plate!
Many played last Saturday and while all revelled in the warm temperatures they despaired at the persistent wind, fast greens and tricky pin positions. Many thanks to Keith Morgan for sponsoring the event. Shamrock and Lois Lane won the day from The Beancounter and his fair lady.
The knockout tournaments appear to be on schedule with most now entering the semi-final phase. Michelle Henry and Mike Fitzgerald and Donna Kuhn and Mark Newman defeated Robyn Sim and Steve Cansell and Bec Bloomfield and Keith Morgan respectively in the mixed knockouts last Saturday.
