This year’s theme, Books light up our world, has resonated with kids according to Children’s Book Council of Australia deputy chairperson Margaret Hamilton.

“It’s a fairly important decision to get a slogan that people will relate to, schools will feel good about promoting and has a positive message about books and reading,” she said.

The ‘reading bug’ on this year’s promotional material, including torches and bookmarks has also gone down a treat.

Now in its 70th year, the annual event continues to delight children across Australia through events such as dress-up days and trivia quizzes.

Ms Hamilton said it was very satisfying to see so many schools and children involved in the celebrations.

“The council began in 1945 in Sydney and was just a group of librarians that got together and though the should promote children's books,” she said.

“It was immediately after the war, they wanted to promote something positive and so the first Children’s Book Week was held in November 1945.

“It was held at the State Library of NSW but then the council went national in 1956 and it's really taken off since then.”
