Currently before Palerang Council is a Development Application for a five block subdivision, on the northern side of Monkittee Creek, the gateway to Braidwood. The location is probably Braidwood’s most significant heritage site, known as the Police Paddock.

It was the site of Braidwood’s first public buildings, the mounted police barrack complex, built between 1835 and 1837. The buildings pre-dated the town which was not surveyed until 1839. The buildings no longer stand but an Archaeological and Heritage Assessment found,
“The Braidwood Mounted police Barracks site and its associated structures have the potential to contain a range of archaeological material… The remains include the ruins of a two story brick stable with police accommodation above, and one (possibly two) associated timber structures (most likely a gaol and an out-kitchen). The site has local significance to the township of Braidwood ...The remains also have State significance for their ability to reveal new information regarding the Mounted Police Force of NSW and about architectural construction and design during Australia’s colonial period.”
The heritage study insists that further excavation works are carried before development approval. The developer, in consideration, has been careful to site the building envelop so as to avoid building over the top of the heritage buildings. However, if the development proceeds how long before all traces are lost forever?
It seems ironic that the first complete town to be registered on the NSW State Heritage Register, could have modern houses built over the top of its most valuable heritage site. In an ideal world this site should be a reserve with careful excavation works showing the foundations of the buildings, displays and signage with illustrations of the buildings telling the story of the site.
Due to pressure from the Braidwood & District Historical Society the Council has, in consideration, extended the date for submissions until 14th November.
