Nathan Coulter-Nile's Test promotion was not the only big call on Tuesday – chairman of selectors Rod Marsh revealed as many as 20 fast bowlers are in line for national duty.

The uncapped West Australian's call-up was slammed as "ridiculous" by Victorian state coach David Saker but is further proof of the grand plans in store for the 28-year-old.

Plans are in place for Coulter-Nile, along with Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson and Patrick Cummins, to form the "backbone" of Australia's next generation of quicks, Troy Cooley, the head coach at Cricket Australia's National Cricket Centre revealed last month.

By the time the Hobart Test is finished Australia will have used at least five quicks in four Tests, with the strong likelihood of more reinforcements needed in Melbourne and Sydney.

Selectors have already named 10 fast bowlers this season, which takes in the abandoned tour of Bangladesh, the series against New Zealand and the first Test against the West Indies.

"I've said, I don't know how many times, that we've got to have a battery of 10 fast bowlers," Marsh said.

"I know everyone out there looks at me as if I'm an idiot when I say that.

"If we come up now with a good attack for this Test match, which we think we have, and for the following two Test matches, and the one after that and the one after that, we'll have called on a lot of fast bowlers.

"That's one thing I can promise you, because they just don't get through a lot of Test matches in a row."

There are also five one-day internationals and three Twenty20s against India crammed in 20 days in January after the series against the West Indies, followed by the tour of New Zealand. That will place even more demands on Australia's pace stocks, which are running bare after the retirement of Mitchell Johnson and season-ending injuries to Starc and Cummins.

Two bolters – Andrew Fekete and Scott Boland – have been plucked this season and more could be in the frame.

"You need a battery of 10 [fast bowlers] for Test cricket, a battery of 10 for 50-over cricket, a battery of 10 for T20 cricket," Marsh said.

"A lot of them overlap, so it might be you need 18 fast-bowlers over the three formats. I haven't done the numbers on that, but I have done the numbers on our depth chart, and on the depth chart we've got 20 fast bowlers that we rate a chance of playing. And wouldn't you love to see that?"

Among that 20 are two youngsters who have made their first-class debuts this season – Western Australia's Joel Paris and Queensland's Billy Stanlake.

"Joel Paris is an interesting one. He's played his first-ever four-day game against Victoria this week and from all reports bowled quite nicely," Marsh said.

"He's one that we'll be keeping our eye on for sure because he's very tall and he swings the ball and he had a brilliant junior career.

"He's not a left-armer, but Billy Stanlake is another one, from Brisbane. We've got two youngsters who I think, going forward, will be very good fast bowlers for Australia."

Cooley is confident the Australian system has the supply of pacemen to meet the demand.

"People don't see the work that goes on into what I call the research and development arm of Cricket Australia," Cooley said.

"There's definitely work being put in to making sure the bowlers coming through have a good skill set.

"The talent manager network system is working well, we're giving opportunities for these young boys to play CA XI games, Matador Cup, the Australia A system. In the background we're making sure we're giving good opportunities to the identified fast bowlers."
