First prize had been set at a minimum of $100,000, a collect that has the potential to change someone’s life.
The tournament consisted of 168 players and in the end we had two that couldn’t be separated.
Yes, two players locked together on $260,000 BettaBucks, which resulted in them sharing first and second prize and both taking home $65,150 cash.
But it was the manner in which they played the tournament that is quite amazing.
Entry to play cost $1,100 and that provided players with $10,000 BettaBucks, or fantasy dollars, to wager across two Saturday’s.
One joint-winner, who goes by the name of ‘reclinerchair,’ was like the classic tortoise.
He won his way in to the action via a jackpot tournament and formulated a plan just to have one bet and hope for the best.
He singled out a roughie in the final race and put his $10,000 stack on Two Blue.
Instead of watching the day’s action, he went on a 30km hike for charity and then returned home for an afternoon nap.
When Two Blue saluted at $26, he was still snoozing and was unaware he was soon to earn a decent pay day.
“I was fast asleep and didn’t realise I had won,” ‘reclinerchair’ said.
The other joint-winner goes by the name of ‘dreamer’ and his path to victory was a little different.
He lost his $10,000 starting stack on Day 1 and started from scratch on Day 2, with players getting a reload of their chips.
His first bet for the day was a loser, spending another $5,000 and leaving him gasping for breath.
He chipped away before eventually plonking on Charlevoix to win at Sandown, which saluted, and then Hard Romp the place which pushed his total to $42,000.
Knowing the leaders were well ahead, he decided his only chance of success was backing a couple of roughies in the last at Sydney.
Two Blue was one of those and he too had $10,000 on.
“I thought I was a chance when [Two Blue] gave a good kick at the 300 mark and not much was coming out of the pack. It’s fair to say it got a good cheer,” ‘dreamer’ said.
