Reginald Geoffrey Morgan, an octogenarian farmer from Jembaicumbene, was convicted in the Downing Centre District Court on August 11 by Judge Peter Whitford.
He had pleaded not guilty to sexual assault (category 3) of a child under 16, sexual/indecent assault of a child under 16 and indecent assault of a male.
On August 11 Judge Whitford found the former St Bede’s Catholic Church acolyte guilty on each count. He sentenced him to an aggregate term of three years, expiring on August 10, 2019, with a non-parole period of 18 months. It comprised two years, six months on the first count, one year on the second charge and six months on the third. The sentence considered time already served.
He was to be imprisoned at Long Bay Prison’s Kevin Waller Unit, which would “appropriately cater for the needs of aged or infirm prisoners”. Morgan would be released on supervised parole on February 10, 2018.
A NSW Supreme Court spokesperson confirmed on Monday that on August 25 Morgan had lodged a notice of intention to appeal his conviction and sentence. He has six months from that date to lodge the appeal itself.
“When the appeal is lodged, the matter will be given a call-over listing and at which a hearing date may be set,” the spokesperson said.
