The Great Australian Commuter Experiment, conducted by Reid Cycles with program partner Bicycle Network, looked at the costs, travel time and satisfaction levels associated with the most commonly used transport options for getting to work each day.

The study revealed that riding a bike on a daily basis was by far the most economical way to get to work with annual costs averaging just $72, while motorists spent more than $2600 on fuel and parking. Cyclists also arrived at work feeling more energised, optimistic and focused that other commuters, the study found.

Bicycle Network general manager of behaviour change, Tess Allaway, said the results backed up what regular cyclists have known all along: riding your bike is “one of the best ways to save money, get fit and active, reduce stress, … and even have a bit of fun.”
