The Black Widows won their first match by defeating ADFA 12–0 in the opening match. They then went down to the Marlins 20–0. In their third game, they beat a strong Goulburn side in a tight 5–0 match. An experienced and well drilled Southern Inland Representative (SIRU) team soundly defeated the Black Widows 48–0 to end the day.
Braidwood Redbacks Rugby manager Nick Pengelly said the wins would not have occurred without the local community support.
“Thanks to all the volunteers, the fantastic businesses for support and sponsorship and the crowd for getting down to support the day,” he said.
More than 200 female athletes from 20 teams (including U14s and U16s) converged to the series hosted by the Braidwood rugby union club and its volunteers.
“Congratulations to the professional Brumbies team for facilitating this great initiative for women’s sport,” Pengelly said.
Australian Rugby Sevens representative Lewis Holland and Olympic gold medallist Charlotte Caslick also attended the event.
The finals of the tournament will be held at the University of Canberra on Saturday, October 29.
