Over three sweltering days at the beginning of January, seventeen Braidwood children took advantage of the MyGolf School Holiday Program offered by the Braidwood Golf Club. The kids received basic instruction in golf skills and were lucky to enjoy some of the pleasures of the golf course. The highlight of the first two days was the participation of a professional golfer, Damon Welsford, from Federal Golf Club in Canberra. Damon brought with him the Under 14 State Champion golfer, Lachlan Chamberlain who was a very welcome and helpful presence. Damon’s skilful tuition and relaxed encouragement were important ingredients in the success of the Program. We were very grateful to Sue Harrison who contributed much to the constructive and effective organisation of the tuition as well as providing her own expertise.

The Program was made possible by a grant from the ACT-Monaro District Golf Association and by the invaluable input from Sue Harrison of Jack Newton Junior Golf, who is is a great friend of Braidwood junior golf. The Braidwood Community Bank generously helped out with caps and golf balls for presentation to each participant at the conclusion of the Program. Local Golf Club members Mike Fitzgerald, David Jones, Marguerite Gardiner and Virginia Groot Obbink helped out with supervisory duties and Barry Toombs took charge of the barbeque at the concluding session. A member of the Golf Club, who wishes to remain anonymous, generously donated $100 to meet the costs of the barbecue.
It was heartening to receive appreciative comments from parents and children and I thank them for these. I hope we see more of both parents and children on the beautiful golf course on their doorstep.
