The annual Braidwood Bowling Club’s pairs’ Carnival was held over the weekend of January 14 and 15. Twenty-four teams participated with a good number of local players, plus teams coming from Queanbeyan, Moruya and the ACT. Saturday saw each team play three games of 15 ends, in what could only be described as warm weather, with the mercury soaring to over 30°C. Sunday’s weather was a more pleasant 24°C and bowlers played another three games of 12 ends each.

The possum saw some remarkable shots on the greens over the weekend. The talk of the club was one particular shot by Sean Robertson in the day’s final game. The shot drew many exclamations when Sean, who was three shots down, pushed his shot to take the jack back to a bowl behind it. This caused the jack to bounce forward to the centre of his team’s bowls.
Visitors made many favourable comments about the condition of the two greens and the Possum wishes to congratulate the voluntary green keepers on their efforts.
The winners of the $800 prize for the whole carnival were the Queanbeyan team of S Huntly and J McClelland who won six games plus an impressive 53 shots. In second place was the team of Sean Robertson and John Bunn who won $400, with a score six games won and 41 shots. In third place were local duo Tom Watson and Gary Kiff winning $200 with wins in four games and a draw in one, giving a total score of four and a half games plus 40 shots. The winners of the first day were G Tasakalos and G. Baker, who scored three games plus 26 shots. The winners of the second game were Jono Johnson and D Shulzs. Billy Halligan and Martin Smith won the prize for the final game with nine shots.
In other bowling news, the 2017 Central South Coast Pennant games starts on February 4. The Braidwood Club will travel to Bodalla for the first away game of the season and the draw for both the Major and Minor 2017 singles are on the notice board.
