The past tells
To label a photo of flooding in Wallace Street late last year as “a one in a hundred year” event is to let Council off the hook.

That storm was more like a twice in ten year event. On December 30 we had only 42mm in 30 minutes. On December 22, 2011, we had 66mm in 40 minutes.
Neither Council nor RMS can claim not to know of the consequences of the pedestrian crossings and their impeding effect on water flow.
They were queried about this at a public meeting to discuss the issue prior to construction but chose to ignore the problem. They should tear up the crossings and start again.
A first year engineering students knows that horizontal gratings block up easily but vertical slots do not. This is why the costly under-road pipes south of Lascelles Street have never been effective.
The storm water drainage problems in Braidwood are not rare, nor will they disappear like magic. They require thinking.

Young and old
Recently my husband and I were staying in Braidwood when he fell over.
As I couldn't help him up, I asked some young men who had just pulled up near us and they readily and happily helped him to his feet.
Young people get a lot of bad press and we gratefully acknowledge their good deed.
We enjoyed our stay and will be back.

Nerve wracking standoff
Good news that the Council is looking into the hideous helicopter pads which so disfigure our main street.
People often step into the path of big trucks, not realising they can’t stop like cars.
Others, who do understand truckies, hang back on the concrete apron, confusing motorists in the opposite lane. Both stand offs are nerve wracking.
My vote is for the concrete to be removed and the area paved flush to the road with local stone. Such a visual cue alerts drivers that they are entering a heritage streetscape. A traffic island in the centre would replace glare and confusion with a more sympathetic and functional space.
