For improvements to Wallace Street and the Braidwood CBD, $500,000 was allocated.
This followed Queanbeyan-Palerang Reguinal Council’s consultation with the community, which sought to understand what the community wanted from the main street.
Lascelles Street also received funding amounting to $800,000. A representative from the council said this money was to reconstruct the road pavement and upgrade the kerb, guttering and underground drainage leading up to Kings Highway.
The Braidwood and Captains Flat pools received $400,000 for significant works needed to modernise them. The council is hoping to supplement this with a grant from the Building Better Regions Fund.
The Braidwood Recreation Ground received $300,000 for Stage 2 of planned improvements.
The Servicemen’s Club was allocated $45,000 towards water storage infrastructure to drought-proof the club.
Around the region, key funding allocations were for improvements to the Bungendore Recreation Ground ($1,500,000), to Abbeyfield Ages Accomodation Centre in Bungendore ($500,000), for the construction of a river path and foot bridge over the Queanbeyan River ($760,000), for the refurbishment of Rusten House in Queanbeyan ($550,000) and for a wet play area at Queanbeyan Aquatic Centre ($450,000).
Bungendore’s town centre was also allocated $500,000 for improvements.
“It is very rare for councils to have $9 million to spend on community infrastructure,” said council administrator Tim Overall. “The funding will allow us to renew and improve infrastructure and community facilities. There are a number of really exciting projects that will be funded through the Stronger Communities Fund.”
This was the second round of the NSW Government’s $10 million Stronger Communities Fund for the amalgamated Queanbeyan and Palerang regional councils. The first round of fund grants was allocated to community groups last year.
