Saturday saw the first hit out for the Redbacks against the Gungahlin Eagles at a soggy Braidwood Recreation Ground. The Redbacks, who re-entered the competition after a year hiatus, where gallant in defeat going down by 14-12 in a game they led for 77 minutes. Second Rower Mitchell Gough opened the scoring with a fine individual try in the opening quarter which was converted by Tommy Watson. Gungahlin tied up the score just before halftime with a converted try on the back of some prolong intense defending by the Redbacks.

The second half saw the Redbacks regain the lead with Jacob Harrison crossing in the corner making the score 12-7 with the conversion missing to the left of the post. The Redback’s defended valiantly in the last 10 minutes in an attempt to hold on to the lead, only to see the Gungahlin fullback pick up a loose ball in his half with three minutes to go to sprint two thirds of the field and score under the posts to even things up. The successful conversion delivered a 14-12 victory to the visitors.
Coach George Sherriff said after the game that the boys should be very proud of themselves after their first competition hit out. He stated “we are a very much unknown package this year but have shown today that we will be very competitive and will make an impact on this competition.” For the man of the match, three points went to Tom Watson, two points Jacob Harrison and one point to Robbie Bell. Players player went to Robbie Bell in a fine performance at five eight from the 18 year old.
