More than 250 people gathered at the War Memorial in Ryrie Park at 6am to commemorate fallen service men and women.
Vice-president of the RSL Sub Branch, Commodore Terence Roach, led the service and gave the address, with prayers read by Senior Constable John Jones of the Monaro Local Area Command and Brother Brian Berg of St Bede’s Church.
At 10.30am a parade assembled on Wallace Street, marching up to the War Memorial for a commemoration ceremony. A contingent from the Light Horse led the march, followed by the Kapyong Company from the Royal Military College, Duntroon, and the Braidwood Group of ex- and serving members of the RSL Sub Branch. These groups were followed by representatives from the Braidwood fire brigades and students from the Central School, St Bede’s and Trinity Catholic College Goulburn. The 1st Braidwood Scout Group brought up the rear.
Marchers and community groups laid wreaths beside the memorial at the conclusion of the parade. Captain Letitia Van Stralen, Chief of Staff to the Chief of Navy, gave the address. Captain Stralen spoke about the efforts of men and women who worked at home and abroad to keep Australia safe during the war.
The RSL Sub Branch was “delighted with the strong support from the district,” said Commodore Roach. “It demonstrates people’s continued appreciation for the relevance of Anzac Day.”
Commodore Roach estimated more than 2000 people attended the mid-morning service.
Services were also held in Araluen and Majors Creek. About 200 people attended the Majors Creek service, which was preceded by a march led by a group from the Australian Defence Force Academy.
