The mercury dropped to -1.3 at the Showgrounds at 6.40am. Gardeners had begun to report patches of frost a few days earlier.
The day warmed up peaking at a sunny 17.8 degrees at 2:30pm, just in time to warm the crowds assembled at the Showgrounds.
