The Year My Voice Broke film charmed audiences on its debut, making a star of lead Noah Taylor as Danny, a young man crushing on his childhood best friend Freya (Loene Carmen) and rallying against the isolation of rural NSW in the 1960s. The film also made a star of Ben Mendelsohn.
In Flirting, Taylor returned to his role as Danny, now at boarding school and with a new focus for his teen passion, the Ugandan exchange student Thandiwe (Thandie Newton). It also starred Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman.
The Year My Voice Broke and Flirting were both filmed in and around Braidwood in the late 1980s and early ‘90s. To celebrate this local connection, the NFSA is offering 10 double passes to the screenings to Braidwood Times readers.
The Year My Voice Broke (103 minutes) will screen at 5.30pm; Flirting (100 minutes) will screen at 8pm: both in the Arc Cinema, McCoy Circuit, Acton.
