Their new shed, on the site shared with the 1st Braidwood Scout Group has been years in the making. After the Scouts went into recess in 2008, the Quilters moved into the Scout Hall, allowing the group to keep up payments on the land.
The groups have been sharing the hall since the Scouts reformed in 2016, but there just wasn’t quite enough space for everyone.
With a bit of money saved up, and a grant from the Community Bank, the Quilters were able to construct their own 6x3 shed, perfectly suited to their needs.
“It’s a great facility, it is lovely,” president of the Quilters, Lesley Horn said.
The Quilters are looking forward to offering more to the community thanks to the new space, says Ms Horn.
The group is considering offering evening classes, activities for kids, and bringing in tutors from out of town.
“We’re looking forward to being able to make it available for more people, so that’s fantastic,” Ms Horn said.
“It’s been a dream for quite a long time, of mine, to be able to have children come and learn how to use a sewing machine.”
Quilters and Scouts might seem like an odd mix, but the groups are proud of having worked together for the good of both, and to benefit the community.
“We were quite proud of the fact that we had two community groups working together to achieve something,” Ms Horn said.
“It’s worked well, we’ve gone and helped the Scouts sew their badges on and that sort of thing.”
