Since 1998 it has been legislation for all dogs and cats to be microchipped and registered with the local council. All puppies and kittens must be microchipped either before being given away or sold, or before they are 12 weeks old. Your pet must then be registered with the local council prior to turning six months old.

This includes working dogs, however the registration for work dogs is free with the council.

Desexing your dog before the age of six months, or cat before the age of four months will also reduce your registration fee. 

For a microchip to work as intended, it is also important for you to update your phone or address changes with the local council or NSW Pet Registry.

We also recommend that you have an emergency secondary contact and keep their details up to date.

Along with microchipping, place a tag on your pet’s collar as well as an address if you are difficult to reach by phone.

Also ensure your pet has a secure run or yard so it cannot escape, even if a gate is left open by strangers.
