The date, Friday 13th, provided the theme. Students performed on a cobwebbed ghost-draped stage at the inaugural MAD NIGHT concert.
Actors performed original pieces, comic sketches and monologues of an outstanding standard. No surprise some of this work has been selected for performance interstate. Amongst a uniformly good cast, a few – Lucy Bauumann-Lionet, Jesse Kay, Caci Mitchell and Meagan Donnelly - shone especially bright.
The musicians were hard on their heels with the school band, rock groups, folk duos and individual singers and players putting in some fine, and often moving, work. Standouts were Aneka Jones, Myrtle Wild, Olivia Faulks, Laynee Saunders and Drew Tisdell.
Lily Morris kept a low profile but provided guitar on just about everything as well as taking part in some drama sketches. Drew doubled as compere for the night and in that capacity had the audience in stitches.
Prints and paintings by students lined the walls of the hall, giving folks something extra to view during their coffee and cake intermission. The standouts here were some accomplished photographs and Louis Munnings’s self-portrait, entitled “Collage”, which won a significant prize at the recent Youth Art Awards.
As Drew said when he wrapped things up, judging by the excellence of the show and the enthusiastic response of the audience, MAD NIGHT will certainly be a fixture in coming years. There’s nowhere else in town where you’ll get such great entertainment for free.
