The rowdy crew marching down Wallace Street were none other than members of Braidwood’s own Regional Arts Group. The group marched from Ryrie Park, to the Regional Arts Gallery to mark the opening of its biennial exhibition of women’s art, ‘Reclaim’.
The third event of its kind in Braidwood, the group began the marches to draw attention to violence against women, and mark the event of Reclaim the Night, says Maggie Hickey, President of BRAG.
“We have a lot of women artists with BRAG, so we decided to make it a special thing,” Ms Hickey said. The exhibition is complemented every other year by a show of a male dominated arts area such as metal or woodwork.
The exhibition is a powerful display of women’s strengths as artists. New this year was a wearable art parade and performances from local musicians Joybelles, My My, Ruby Dears and Rebecca Doran.
“We didn’t want to sort of emphasize the aspect of victimhood, we wanted to emphasise the fact that women are achievers,” Ms Hickey said.
