On Sunday, users of the Apple map application were surprised to find the Peninsula Link freeway listed as the most convenient way to drive to Mornington Peninsula beaches.

But the freeway does not open for at least another week.

Started by the Brumby government and costing $2.3 billion to build, Peninsula Link runs for 25 kilometres from the end of EastLink in Carrum Downs to the Mornington Peninsula Freeway in Mount Martha.

However, at present, all traffic must use the Moorooduc Highway, which gets badly congested in summer, and is likely to be choked on Monday with traffic heading to the beach. The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting Monday's temperature will reach 32 degrees.

A spokeswoman for the consortium building the Peninsula Link freeway, Carol Bartley, confirmed the road was not yet open.

Google Maps on Sunday gave the correct directions for travel through the area.

Apple's map application, included since September on the iPhone 5, has been riddled with bugs and has left many users longing for Google Maps, previously included as standard on the phones.

Last month, Victoria Police warned it was concerned at bugs in Apple's mapping program that saw tourists using the new operating system attempting to reach Mildura instead being sent 70 kilometres away to a national park.

Several of the motorists had become stranded in the Murray-Sunset National Park in hot weather, a police spokeswoman said, ''making this a potentially life-threatening issue''.

An Apple spokesperson could not be reached for comment on Sunday, but last month the company referred complaints about its maps product to chief executive Tim Cook's apology for problems with it.
