Sales were strong at the Monthly Prime and Store Cattle Sale held by the Braidwood Associated Agents on Friday November 4, 2016. The agents yarded 830 fair to excellent quality cattle, with 558 cattle over the scales and 272 in the Open Auction section.
All categories met strong competition from a good gallery of buyers, some local and some who came from as far away as Pakenham (Vic), Wodonga (Vic), Cootamundra, Wagga, Goulburn, Yass, Harden, Moss Vale, Moruya, Bungendore, Queanbeyan, Crookwell.
The market was as strong as I can remember in my years in this industry, except cows for slaughter which were marginally cheaper on last sales results, but this is commensurate with other selling centres in the state. Restrocking cattle just seem to get dearer, as this season we are experiencing gets better and better throughout the Eastern states of Australia. This is especially true for young females and is reflected in cows and calve prices.
Best cows and calves sold to $1,960, which was for a pen of eight Hereford/Angus x cows, 6 to 8 years, with Angus calves at foot bred by Krawarree Pastoral Co, and purchased by Lindsay Gibbons from Pakenham (Vic). Mr Gibbons also purchased seven Angus cows and calves for the same price from the same breeder.
Col Barlow, Braidwood, sold four Angus cows with Limousin x calves at foot for $1,800, which were purchased by Wayne Downey, Moruya.
Chris Cowie, Charleys Forest, sold 13 Angus cows 3-5 years, not station mated, for $1,035.
Young heifers were well sought after, with the tops of these making up to $1223 and most making between $800 and $1150. Araluen Valley, Araluen, sold 11 excellent quality 8-9 month heifer calves, pure Brookfield blood for $1,150 to a Harden Buyer, who also purchaed a lne of 13 Hereford/Angus x heifer calves for $1,040.
Young restocking steer calves also met strong competition and sold in a similar range as the young heifer calves, for instance, Araluen Valley sold a pen of 8 Angus steer calves for $1,115 to Gibb & Co., Queanbeyan.
Other quotes from the scale cattle:
Friday’s sale was as strong a sale as I have been involved in here in Braidwood, we can be proud of the great results we have obtained which are commensurate with other centres in our area. Thanks to the breeders, who continue to give us great stock to work with and market on our behalf.
