Twenty-three horse owners from Braidwood and surrounds heard Stuart Myers from Equiculture give presentations on managing horses, pasture and properties last week.
Horse owners need great land management knowledge and skills just like all custodians of the land, particularly when faced with the challenges of managing horses on certain soil types in the Braidwood district.
The ‘Healthy Horses for Small Properties’ workshop ran over two evenings. Stuart, who is an acclaimed author and expert on horse property management, turned much of our thinking on its head. He spoke about sustainable horse keeping practices and gave fantastic insights into how to save time and money on horse properties.
Other topics covered included: horse health and welfare, the relationship between horses and pasture, pasture management systems, worm/manure management and much much more. Putting the Equiculture principles into practice will really benefit the horses and the properties of everyone who attended the workshops.
Many local businesses supported the event and the Upper Shoalhaven Landcare would like to thank Braidwood Vet Surgery, Landmark Daniel Walker, Braidwood Rural and Building Supplies and Saddlecamp. Our thanks also go to guest speaker, veterinarian Kate Sawford, and to Animal Health Products. The event was also supported by the Australian Govenment's Landcare Program.
The workshops proved really valuable, it was great to learn how we can best care for our horses and our property.
