Widely recognised composer and musician Paul J Baker, well known bass player Stafford Ray and classically trained pianist and singer Sarah Leaver make up the group.
It formed three years ago after both Baker and Ray had retired, and moved to the Eurobodalla area.
Each wanted to continue writing and performing, so when they met through the Eurobodalla Jazz Club, things fell into place.
Used to performing with large orchestras and big bands, performing in a trio has stretched grown both Baker and Ray, Leaver says.
Having written music all his life, Baker wasn’t going to stop when he retired.
His original compositions which feature are a in a jazzy style, with a pop feel and a real groove, says Leaver.
Performing with a smaller group gives him opportunities to play in a way he hasn’t had the chance previously.
In particular the challenge of playing guitar on the front line has been enjoyable.
Without the backing of a larger band, he has been able to make the song melodically interesting in a way that engages the audience, and gives the music a depth to go somewhere and mean something, says Leaver.
“You’ve much more exposed when there’s only three of you,” Leaver said. “You’re musicality and musicianship is really on display.”
As one of Australia’s most distinguished sessions musicians, Baker worked across the music industry, radio, and television.
The performance will integrate music with stories of Baker and Ray’s experiences in the industry.
Approximately half will be instrumental, and half sung.
- The Sarabande Jazz Trio will perform at Braidwood Anglican Church on Sunday February 4, from 2-3:15pm, followed by afternoon tea, cost is $25 for adults, $20 for concession and $5 for children, for more information contact Sarah Leaver on 0431 247 737
