That’s what Jackie French AM asked 18 young people on Friday night at the Braidwood and District and Education Foundation presentation night. BDEF awarded 18 grants to local young people.
Amanda Hall, BDEF, said the evening was a celebration of the value of community and the importance of supporting our young people, not only financially, but also by providing opportunities in the workplace.
Former grant recipients Brooke O’Connell and Billy Hatzis underlined the value of this support. Each told the audience about the importance of the financial help they received which enabled them to purchase tools and textbooks and also help with travel to and from TAFE.
Brooke was a recipient in 2015 and has a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery. She attended Braidwood Central School from kindergarten to the end of high school, did her apprenticeship in Braidwood and now has her own business in the town. Billy received a grant in 2014 for Certificate IV Cabinet Making, he was apprenticed to Lyle Crisp and continues to work successfully in Braidwood.
Ms French the evening’s guest speaker provided advice and encouragement to the recipients. The author, historian, ecologist, Australian Children’s Laureate and 2015 Senior Australian of the Year is an advocate for learning.
Ms French spoke directly to the recipients challenging them to make the most of community support. She asked they consider ‘not what will you do, but how will you live? How you want to live is what matters.’
BDEF would like to thank the community for the generosity that provides these opportunities to our youth.
