But it’s a shame we couldn’t watch their races live. Unless you wanted to tune in to a highlights package from the morning before at midnight on television, you would have missed the Games.
Australian Sports Commission chief executive Kate Palmer said the Australian team had its best performance at a Winter Paralympic Games in 16 years.
Australia finished 15th on the medal table between Norway in 14th place and Finland in 16th place.
The Australian team came home with its first gold medal since 2002 courtesy of Simon Patmore and three bronze medals.
After three Paralympic Games, Melissa Perrine picked up her first Paralympic medals with her sighted guide Christian Geiger.
Due to her persistence, Perrine was also named the Australian flag bearer for the closing ceremony.
Meanwhile Sam Tait, who expected to compete in his first Paralympic Games in 2022, made his Paralympic debut four years earlier than he had planned.
Tait, who has been touted by the Australian Paralympic Committee as a star of the future, had a top 15 finish in the men’s para-alpine sit-ski class, placing 11th out of 26 runners.
So why can’t we watch all of these moments live on television?
It can’t be an issue with the time difference.
The PyeongChang 2018 Olympics had extensive coverage and South Korea is only two hours behind Australia.
It’s hard to argue that it’s about ratings either.
Ticket sales for the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games was stronger than ever before.
According to the Australian Paralympic Committee, ticket sales for the Paralympic Winter Games reached 320,531, breaking the record for the most tickets sold for a Winter Games edition.
Ticket sales had surpassed the 316,200 that were sold for the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games.
Sales were also almost double the 162,974 that were sold for the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games, which highlighted the growing global interest in Paralympic sport.
With this much interest, it makes perfect sense to have better coverage of the Games.
