Messages pretend to be from large organisations you can trust and are sent via email, SMS, or other social media platforms.
The scammer asks for you to provide or confirm your personal details such as bank account or credit card details due to a technical error.
Alternatively, the scammer may alert you to an unauthorised or suspicious activity on your account and ask to verify your bank account or credit card details.
If you give out this information to the scammer, they will carry out fraudulent activities on your accounts.
Some warning signs of scamming might include:
- the email or text does not address you by your proper name
- the email or text may contain typing and grammatical errors.
- the website address does not look like the address you usually use.
Be careful with every email or message you receive. If you are uncertain, delete the email.
Never provide your personal, credit card or on line account details if you receive a call claiming to be from your bank.
Instead, ask for their name and contact number and make an independent check with the organisation in question before calling back.
A simple phone call to your bank can help relieve a lot of worry and potential fraud.
