Braidwood Redbacks have been participating in the Goulburn Junior Rugby Union competition for several years now and have had quite an impact with their injection of teams.
The Friday night time slot means that parents and players have to leave town shortly after the kids get home from school to make it in time for the kickoff at in the under 6 and under 8s time slot of 5.30pm.
David Anable of Goulburn Junior Rugby Union said the Braidwood Redbacks are an important part of the competition and make a substantial contribution to the enjoyable family friendly atmosphere that is associated with the evenings.
“It is great having everyone coming together at the end of the working week, bringing the family along to watch and participate in the games,” Anable said. “The inclusion of Braidwood and Crookwell adds strength to the competitions and it is often the starting point for players to go on to play at rugby union at higher age levels.
“Watching the youngsters play is quite entertaining and it is great to watch them improve from their first games with little or no clue as to what they are doing to solid team players.”
Damien Bigg who coaches the Redbacks under 10s said, “The under 10's are a mix of experienced players from last year with some new rugby players this year.
“The team was undefeated last year, in a tight competition, so some of the kids kind of expect this to be the same , though only hard work and progression will get them there.”
The sides are mixed with the girls showing great athleticism and a willingness to get involved in the tackling. Braidwood Redbacks have senior grade men’s and women’s teams so they are keen to enthuse the youngsters.
“All the kids are very enthusiastic for the game which makes my job easy at times,” Bigg said. “Though a bit of discipline doesn't go astray.
“This is my first year as coach with the last three years as an assistant. “It is my time to stand up and with my playing career with the Redbacks well and truly over, I take great enjoyment in seeing the kids running around and playing for each other and doing Braidwood proud.
“Friday night in Goulburn is always entertaining, especially if the weather isn't kind, though a great way to finish the week off.”
