A crowd of almost 60 people has unanimously agreed to the formation of a Braidwood community association.  The crowd had gathered at a meeting last Thursday evening, May 17, chaired by Paul Cockram, and convened by Sue Murray.

The town has need of an organisation where local residents can come together to discuss local issues.  Amalgamation into a very large local government area has created a need for community representation. There is also a need for better communication between different groups within the community.

Speakers at the meeting raised local issues of concern, but most were in agreement that the real need right now is for an inclusive organisation to unite and represent the community through co-operative action. So many local groups support the community in different ways. This proposal aims to make the community an even more supportive one.

A working group of 13 volunteers was formed to further investigate ways to achieve the formation of a Braidwood community association. This group will discuss the aims, structure and financing of the proposed association, and report back to another open meeting in two months’ time.

The working group:

  • Sue Murray
  • Paul Cockram
  • John Tuckwell
  • David Anthony
  • Richard Jolley
  • David McClymont
  • Hollie Baker
  • Eryn Wood
  • Ray Whiteman
  • Billie-Mae Kennedy
  • Sarah Spencer
  • Tim Wimborne, and
  • Meraiah Foley

Four Queanbeyan-Palerang councillors were in attendance.  Mayor Tim Overall addressed the meeting, and other councillors present were Radmila Noveska, Peter Marshall and Pete Harrison. Apologies were received from councillors Kenrick Winchester and Brian Brown.

A date for the next open meeting will be announced once the working group has met to start discussions.
