Twenty-six BCS students joined about 300 others from Ulladulla, Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma high schools to visit the ‘outreach’ campus.
BCS careers counsellor Rob Martin said the students undertook activities with three university faculties, to explore facilities and pathways to higher education.
The participating faculties this year included nursing, engineering and business, Mr Martin said. “Batemans Bay is an outreach campus, so they try to cover what’s at the main campus in Wollongong,” he said.
The idea is that Year 10 students are about to select senior years (11 and 12) subjects, some of which lead to tertiary studies, so a trial run of uni subject selection is “a really good thing to do before they have to do it”.
There’s no commitment to go to uni, or select the courses; it’s all in aid of insight to decision-making skills, he said, “because there are enormous decisions they’ve got to make, and for most of them, it’s – Do I even want to go to uni?
“About 10 to 15 percent definitely do by Year 8, but many others are unsure.”
Mr Martin retired from teaching five years ago after 36 years with BCS, arriving in Braidwood in 1981. His work as a careers counsellor is usually one day a week, advising on pathways to work and further studies.
“They all enjoyed Future Finders, and for our students to intermingle with others was very positive for them,” he said.
