The local lads, buoyed by their strong performance against ladder leaders Crookwell last weekend, went into the game with a strong team spirit and confidence.
Despite playing the game with 14 players for 35 minutes against a full strength Jindabyne side, the Redbacks turned in their best performance of the season.
The local boys out-muscled the Jindabyne side and looked threatening whenever they had possession.
The Redbacks posted first points when Leyland Blyton made a strong run from 30 meters out to beat numerous defenders and crossed the line near the posts, and Ben Howard duly converted.
Jindabyne responded with a dubious try with the referee unsighted which gave the attacking Jindabyne side the benefit of the doubt.
The score see-sawed with Jindabyne taking the lead. The local boys responded when Kiwi Hopkins dived over on the back of some very promising play. The Redbacks went into half time 17-15 down.
Despite playing short with 14 men for the first 35 minutes, the local side were tough and well structured.
Buzz McGlone was relentless taking the ball forward on every possible occasion. Luke Turner was again everywhere making the most of every tackle and carry.
The locals then impressed the crowd with a length of the field try from broken play to close the gap 20-24 with 15 minutes to go.
Unfortunately Gus Sherriff was then sin-binned for 10 minutes for an accidental high tackle, but the young Redbacks continued to fight and with victory in sight the boys worked very hard to create opportunities.
However, the Redbacks, playing with no reserves soon succumb to exhaustion and let Jindabyne in to score the final points and come away with a 34 to 20 win. Braidwood should be very proud of this outstanding team of local never say die footballers.
Three points went to Nathan Moffitt, two points to Luke Turner and one point to Billy Hatzis. Players Player went to Buzz McGlone and Chicks Pick to Josh McNamara.
This week the team travel to Yass for a tough encounter with the Rams.
The Redbacks’ next home game will be on the 21st July when the boys take on the Gungahlin Eagles. This will also double as the Redbacks’ Sponsors Day where the pre-game entertainment will be a quality Golden Oldies game with the Braidwood Daddy Long Legs taking on the Gungahlin Old Boys.
We are still searching for more Daddy Long Legs to come out of hibernation to make this a fantastic day!
