The Braidwood Redbacks will be holding their annual sponsors day in conjunction with their home game against Gungahlin.
In a day full of entertainment Braidwood’s own Golden Oldies side, the Daddy Long Legs will take the field at 1.15pm in a high quality rugby clash with the Gungahlin Old Boys. Following this rugby bonanza the Redbacks will take on Gungahlin The Redbacks will be hoping this game will result in their first win of the season.
In what promises to be an entertaining match, the Daddy Long Legs will be led out by club stalwart Tony Cairns ,who will be donning the famous purple shorts only worn by legends of the game.
While some potential players are away the boys are hoping to have about 20 of the local games legends slip into their shorts and jerseys and lace on the boots.
Some of the players likely to take to the park include Nick Pengelly, Nick Kemp, Richard Walker and George Sheriff.
In the game that follows the Redbacks, led by Cade Graff who has been playing really strongly and leading by example, will run onto the park looking to put what they have learned from the earlier games this season into practice.
Several of the team have suffered injuries so are unavailable ,likely to leave the Redbacks short on, or without a bench.
Coach Nick Kemp said the culture of the team is really strong this year and they are a tight group committed to giving their all. “They have been constantly improving both as individual players and as a team throughout the season,” Kemp said. “Even if they are playing short they rally around and perform to their best.
“Luke Turner who is has only been playing with the Redbacks for a few weeks is making a mark as an open side flanker.
Last Saturday the Redbacks went down to a high flying Yass side in a hard fought encounter at the Yass Showground.
Highlight’s for the Redbacks in this game included a fine try to Harry Shoemark on the end of a cracking backline move.
Nick Pengelly said, “the Redbacks invite all sponsors and supporters to the Recreation Ground from 1pm on Saturday to enjoy a roast beef roll and drinks (complimentary for sponsors), while witnessing some quality rugby union.
“All sponsors and supporters are then invited to the after match festivities at the Royal Mail Hotel from 5.30pm with entertainment by our very own musical comedian Hamish Hudson.”
The Redbacks are looking forward to seeing a large crowd at the Recreation Ground this Saturday to cheer them on to their first win. The expect that Gungahlin will be bringing plenty of supporters to cheer both there oldies and the younger side on too.
If you have not seen a game of country rugby union before or it has been a while this is the best opportunity all year to take in the excitement and support the Braidwood Redbacks and Daddy Long Legs.
