With the region deep in drought and a stiff north-westerly blowing, the ‘sod’, was more like a shovelful of dust, but the $23 million project to reroute the Nerriga Road to iron out one of its worst bends as well as construct a new bridge to replace the existing single-lane one, should be completed by 2020.
The project is jointly funded by the New South Wales and Australian governments, with the state government contributing $18 million and the Australian government contributing $5 million.
The existing Allan Truss Bridge at Charleyong was built in 1901 and has significant heritage value to the district. There has been considerable opposition in the Nerriga district to the demolition of the Allan Truss bridge.
