Although interactions with snakes are sometimes difficult to avoid, ticks are extremely easy to prevent.
There are lots of easy to administer products to prevent ticks. Although spot-on products generally only provide protection for one month, there are now some chews that last up to four months.
Ideally these should be given at least a few days prior to your visit to a coastal region.
You should still conduct twice daily searches on your pet whilst at the coast, and for a good week following your return.
It is important to know ticks can travel on clothes, beach towels or even the camper trailer, so if you go to the coast without your pet, it is recommended that you give them a preventative treatment just in case you bring a tick home with you.
And with spring comes puppies and kittens!
If you have a new litter, don’t forget they need to be wormed at two, four, six, eight, 10 and 12 weeks, followed by every month until three months, and then once every three months for life.
It is also vital that the mum is wormed about two weeks prior to giving birth, and then two weeks after the puppies are born, to prevent the spread of worms from the mum to puppies or kittens through either the placenta or milk.
