Financial abuse involves the improper or illegal use of a person’s finances or property by another person with whom they may have a relationship implying trust.
This form of abuse can happen to anyone, no matter their age or how much money they have.
Financial abuse is about power, control and even manipulation, and invariably accompanies other forms of abuse such as emotional abuse, physical abuse or denial of rights.
There are predominantly four main forms of financial abuse: elder financial abuse, domestic financial abuse, disability financial abuse and language/cultural abuse. All of these are quite self explanatory.
Financial abuse is a serious issue with far-reaching consequences for individuals, their families and the community.
It doesn’t just happen in the cities or major towns, it can happen in much smaller communities.
