It wasn’t just a glorious day that the Braidwood Tennis Club turned on for the match, they also produced a magnificent lunch feast, to welcome new faces and of course some fabulous tennis.

So much so that, despite missing the presence of their formidable president, Michael Toirkens, the Braidwood club was victorious in retaining the impressive trophy for another year, winning 10-4, with four sets drawn.

Twelve players from Braidwood, in their stylish new club shirts, took on a squad of the same size from Bungendore. Each pair played three sets in shortened sets of just eight games each.

The club said that it was lovely to see the return of former club member Keely Howard in the team, who partnered her father beautifully, and the pair remained unbeaten throughout the day. 

The club also welcomed a new member in Reto Fuhrer, who fortunately has more than just his Swiss heritage in common with Roger Federer and was hence a great asset to the team. He partnered with Jodie Devane for the day.

Sean Dodd tried not to upset too many of his Woodwork gallery café customers, but was grateful to have a Sunday off and to have the opportunity to represent Braidwood.

All games were played in good spirit and on such fabulous courts in great weather, the club could not have asked for anything more to make the day a rousing success. 

The club’s Spring tournament wrapped up recently, with the grand final having taken place on December 3. The winners of the tournament were Team Four, who won a nailbiting encounter against Team Three to take away the hotly contested plaque.

The Palerang Cup has a long history in the region. Tennis competitions between towns in the Palerang District used to be commonplace throughout the 1940’s-60’s, before it died out and was then revived as the Palerang Cup in 2013.
