You don’t need to pack up the car, the kids and the dog and battle the holiday traffic in the heat to have fun. Here’s a few things to do locally that are fun, inexpensive and bound to make for some great holiday memories.
Bombay Reserve is a great swimming and camping spot
- Swimming: It’s summer and the first real heatwave of the season has arrived. With temperatures tipped to reach the mid-30s for the next week, what better way to cool down than to get wet. The Braidwood Memorial Swimming Pool is open seven days – take a picnic and meet up with friends. If the public pool is not your thing, why not head out to the Bombay Reserve or Warri and cool down in the Shoalhaven River. Swimming, kayaking or just lolling in the shade on the riverbank.
- Riding: Saddle Camp is closed on the public holidays, but otherwise will be open. The Saddle Camp caters for all levels of riding ability, from the rank beginner to the experienced, and for all ages. Take the kids out for the day or book in for an overnight stay.
- Cycling: The quiet country roads around Braidwood offer lots of opportunity to pack a lunch and take a casual ride out to Mongarlowe, Majors Creek, Reidsdale or Bombay. Don’t forget to take lots of water in this weather. Some of the national parks also have cycle-friendly tracks.
- Hiking: This area is blessed with a wealth of diverse and beautiful national parks are hiking trails. The Monga, Budawang and Deua National Parks are easily accessible and have walking tracks for all fitness levels. Escape the heat in town and go for a stroll in the bush. The Visitors Information Centre has maps of the various national parks, or you can find them on the National Parks and Wildlife Service webpage.
- Browsing: If the mere thought of physical activity in 30+ temperatures leaves you feeling exhausted, how about checking out some of our great galleries? Altenburg, The Creative Edge, Four Magpies and fYRE are all open with a huge range of exhibitions and displays. fYRE has a pop-up exhibition of vintage collectible dolls: Patsy and Friends, and Four Magpies has original paintings by local artist, Jennifer Boyes. There’s also Braidwood Antiques, the Original Lamp Shop and Bernadoff’s for the collectors.
