South East Local Land Services and DPI Fisheries have recently got together with a group of practitioners, researchers, communicators, community groups and recreational fishers to discuss how best to focus on action for the next 5, 10 and 50 years in a long term monitoring and action plan for rivers with Maccas in South East NSW. This is just the beginning of this project called “Reaching for Recovery for the Endangered Macquarie Perch in South East NSW”
Maccas were stocked in the Mongarlowe River early in the 19th Century. Populations like this one can be key to its survival and genetic diversity and free from Redfin, a pest species that carries the devastating EHNV virus.
Part of this Macca project is a 'Downstream Assessment' on the Mongarlowe River in February 2019. If you have a canoe and want to join in, community are invited to participate.
To find out more please come along to the meeting at the Mongarlowe Bush Fire Brigade shed on Thursday 24th January at 6pm.
