Kimba, with husband Ryan and their three children, Dante (11), Sascha (9) and Isis (6), was back in her hometown of Canberra last week when the Braidwood Times caught up with her, preparing for three gigs in the capital before heading out to Majors Creek for a gig this weekend.

Kimba and Ryan are described as a ‘jazz duo’, but this is simply a verbal truncation of a musical scope that embraces everything from jazz standards, through 1950s be-bop all the way to Aussie pub classics.

Ryan plays authentic fingerstyle jazz guitar and Kimba’s vocals are warm and tonal. Their performances are one hundred percent live with no overdubbing.

The duo has been a regular fixture on the Melbourne jazz scene for years: Kimba said this is the 21^st year they have been playing together.

Now, with a young family, they decided the time was right to head off on the road, see the country playing gigs along the way.

Most of the gigs, Kimba said, are pre-booked under the banner of the “Vintage Jukebox Tour”, which gives them a schedule to which they have to adhere. However, it isn’t always possible to prebook, so they’re picking up music work as they go as well.

En route to Canberra, they came through Bright and Harrietville, and had played an ad hoc gig in Jugiong. Kimba said that where gigs can’t be arranged, they’ll busk, “but that’s a last option,” she said, “as we’re professional musicians and we prefer to be able to play a venue.”

This weekend will be our turn to hear this duo. Kimba and Ryan will be playing a one-off gig at Millpond as a fundraiser for the Majors Creek Progress Association.

Majors Creek Festival organiser, Hannah Gillespie, is excited to be able to bring these two to the Braidwood district for the first time.

What can we expect to hear?

Kimba said that for casual events they like to keep concerts lighthearted with audience involvement.

“People will be out with their friends for a great afternoon and we like to reflect that,” she said.

“There’ll be some originals and standards, along with covers and Aussie pub rock classics.”

The Vintage Jukebox Tour is at Millpond Farm on Saturday February 16 between 3pm and 6pm.

Ticket price includes a drink on arrival and full afternoon tea with bar facilities (no BYO).
