The project, funded by the NSW Government Office of Environment and Heritage, commenced last July with the mapping of local sites of historical significance to establish an “archaeological zoning plan”.
The full project will be undertaken in three stages. The draft plan currently on exhibition represents Stage 1, which includes a review of historical material relating to the early settlement of Braidwood; an assessment of the significance of the archaeological resource of the town; GIS mapping of the town to identify sites of likely significance and to determine where further assessment is required; and preparing an inventory of heritage items.
The intent of the plan is to inform future development of the town and its precincts, and to ensure that the unique history of the town is preserved.
The draft Archaeological Management Plan, Stage 1, is on display in the council office and comments can be made to council.
