Burke replaces premiership coach Paul Groves who departed after three seasons in charge to pursue a teaching role.

Burke played 323 games for the Saints and was captain for five seasons.

The 49-year-old played a key role in helping set up St Kilda's women's program and was also an assistant coach for their VFLW side.

"I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to coach the Western Bulldogs AFLW team for the next two seasons," Burke said.

"I can't wait to work with the athletes and help them become the best footballers and people they can be.

"The Bulldog faithful loves their AFLW team and we will continue to do the red, white and blue proud."

The Bulldogs won their inaugural flag under Groves in 2018 when they defeated Brisbane at Princes Park, but were forced to begin the search for his successor after his surprise announcement.

"There was significant interest in the position and a strong field of male and female applicants," Dogs AFL chief Debbbie Lee said.

"After undergoing an extensive process, we believe Nathan is the right person to lead our group moving forward.

"We look forward to Nathan building on the strong foundation we have laid to date."
