What is animal husbandry? - Many people have different livestock on their small farm and it is important to know how to manage our domestic farm animals and the regulations that apply. To enable a farm animal to be productive for us we need to know how to care, feed and house them. We also need to know to handle stock and manage health issues. This is the basis of animal husbandry.
Wynlen house is running a basic animal husbandry workshop on Saturday 19 July. This workshop is designed to provide you with knowledge of animal husbandry practices, particularly humane handling and animal welfare on a small scale. The day primarily focuses on how to care for, feed and manage poultry (ducks, chooks geese and turkeys) and other livestock, particularly pigs, so that they provide you and your family with the most delicious meat and eggs.
Key issues around the slaughter of livestock will be discussed including to slaughter on the farm or not. Important but often vexing topics such as state and federal legislation relating to keeping and slaughtering livestock are fully explained giving a head start to complying with current livestock practices and standards.
Wynlen house is also running a workshop on all season cool climate vegetable growing. Both courses are designed for people on small farms; who are homesteading; interested in self sufficiency; and or local food production.
