Driving east from Nerriga you may have noticed the pretty park like farm which has over 1000 chestnut trees and several hundred walnut trees.
Coming from science backgrounds, the couple purchased the farm which had been established in the early 1980s. Sassafras Nuts is a commercial chestnut and walnut farm located in the Budawang Ranges, 50 km south west of Nowra and about 20km east of Nerriga.
The Farm Gate open on weekends from late March to late April and visitors are welcome during the autumn harvest to purchase nuts and have a picnic.
The Farm caters for the ‘on-farm experience’ and is very popular with Europeans such as Portuguese and Italians who favour the pick your own method. Richard says the farm has coach tours groups come too and they have recently upgraded the picnic areas and facilities, including bbqs. Chestnut roasting may be available too (weather conditions permitting).
Buckets and bags for picking and packing are supplied or and nuts picked by you are charged per kilogram. Otherwise there are plenty already picked and graded.
Chestnuts Australia says
The chestnut really is a superfood – super versatile and super healthy. While the health benefits of the chestnut include low oil and fat content, very high levels of vitamins C and E and folate, less well-known are the incredible health benefits of the chestnut’s pellicle, or inner skin. The farm is open Saturday – Sunday 8.00am – 4.00pm, Monday to Friday by appointment only 10.00am to 3.00pm. For bookings phone 4423 2248. Please note that no pets are permitted on the property.
