Palerang United travelled to Gungahlin and played in atrocious conditions with a howling westerly wind roaring across the field with the occasional sleeting rain. It was one of the few games to be played in Canberra as it was on a synthetic pitch and Palerang United had a full roster of players to take up the challenge. Gungahlin started the game at a cracking pace with plenty of possession but both teams found the conditions appalling and struggled to keep the ball in the field of play. The wind was that strong it was hard to communicate with each other on the field and Gungahlin managed to capitalise on this when they created space down the left side of the goal box and squeezed in the shot on goal to hand them the lead after 30 minutes. Palerang United certainly had chances on goal as well with Mitch Moon and Johnny Milner having shots on goal but the conditions were certainly a distraction.
Halftime came and went with the boys feeling like they were in with a chance if they could get some quality possession however the playing surface and conditions were a major obstacle and unfortunately Gungahlin had other ideas. Midway through the second half Gungahlin managed three goals in 10 minutes and Palerang United felt dejected. To the team’s credit though they never gave up and Tristan Neate and Mitchell Roberts moved forward to have some excellent strikes on goal with Mitchell’ shot hitting the upright and going wide. A tough game was completed when Gungahlin managed to score at the final whistle and the game was lost 5-0.
Next week the boys are back home again taking on ANU Orange with kickoff at 1pm. See you there!
